French circus company Les Filles du Renard Pâle’s Résiste is an evocative experimental tightrope act and trip hop concert in one. A dancer struggling with a tightrope that moves to music in the style of British electronic music from the early 90s.
When Les filles du renard pâle (Eng. The Daughters of the Pale Fox) create circus, it is often accompanied by electronic music and singing, and Résiste is no exception. The title means “Resist”, and with the tightrope alternately falling and tilting, the dancer constantly works with resistance moving through the unexpected for 40 minutes straight.
– I work a lot with the idea of taking risks, says Johanne Humblet, artistic director of Les filles du renard pâle. To move forward, you have to take risks. That is the message. One must dare the unknown. Anything is possible, as long as you give yourself the means to achieve it.
Circus in Dialogue with Music
Résiste is also a concert with original music by the band Deadwood, written especially for the show, together with a cover of French singer France Gall’s song Résiste. The music is reminiscent of trip-hop, British electronic music from the early 90’s, a style born in Bristol.
The music and the tightrope act were created in the same room, in dialogue, Johanne Humblet explains. Much like the work on the tightrope, the music moves between instability and balance. All with a carefree, humorous singer who is looking more to the audience than the tightrope dancer.
– Just like in life, we all want to be in relationships, but each also in their own universe.
